Some prescriptions may be valid for up to 12 months
From 2nd Feb 2026
Recent changes to prescribing regulations have expanded the maximum allowable prescription length from three months to twelve months from February 1st 2026. At Papamoa Beach Family Practice we prioritise patient safety and providing the highest level of clinical care.
After reviewing the Royal New Zealand College of General Practitioners (RNZCGP) guidance on this topic, clinicians at Papamoa Beach Family Practice will be implementing a SIX MONTH PRESCIPTION POLICY for individuals with STABLE LONG TERM HEALTH CONDITIONS that require ongoing monitoring. This is to ensure that patient safety remains at the forefront of clinical care.
Some individuals may be advised that a twelve month prescription is a safe and appropriate option, and others may be recommended to continue with three monthly review – particularly if there are multiple medications or unstable conditions.
What does this mean for you?
- If you are on long term medication, you will need to have a face to face appointment with your doctor to discuss whether six or twelve month prescriptions are recommended for you.
- If you are on multiple medications, or have a medical condition that requires regular monitoring (e.g. diabetes, high blood pressure, thyroid condition, respiratory conditions, mental health conditions or pain syndromes) then you will likely be advised to continue with three or six monthly reviews.
- Once your prescription runs out, you will need to see your doctor for a face to face review – there will no longer be an option to phone for a repeat prescription.
- Some medications may need to be dispensed monthly or three monthly from the pharmacy but you will not require another prescription until your three, six, or twelve month review as directed by your doctor.
